چکیده

Applied spectroscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool for high energy density plasmas produced with modern pulsed power facilities. These facilities create unique plasma environments with a broad range of electron densities 1013–1023 cm−3 and temperatures 100–103 eV immersed in strong magnetic 100 T and electric up to 1 GV/m fields. This paper surveys the application of plasma spectroscopy to diagnose a variety of plasma conditions generated by pulsed power sources including: magnetic field penetration into plasma, measuring the time-dependent spatial distribution of 1 GV/m electric fields, opacity measurements approaching stellar interior conditions, characteristics of a radiating shock propagating at 330 km/s, and determination of plasma conditions in imploded capsule cores at 150 Mbar pressures. These applications provide insight into fundamental properties of nature in addition to their importance for addressing challenging pulsed power science problems. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3309722

Use of Laser Spectroscopy for High-Accuracy Investigations of Relatively-Dilute Pulsed Plasmas with Nanosecond Time Resolution

In this report we describe the development of new approaches to measure the electric field and properties of relatively dilute plasmas under high-power pulses at the nanosecond time scale. These approaches are based on high-resolution laser spectroscopy. The study is carried out in a coaxial-pulsed-plasma configuration. The plasma was doped with a laser-produced lithium beam, followed by pumpin...

Pulsed plasma etching for semiconductor manufacturing

Power-modulated (pulsed) plasmas have demonstrated several advantages compared to continuous wave (CW) plasmas. Specifically, pulsed plasmas can result in a higher etching rate, better uniformity, and less structural, electrical or radiation (e.g. vacuum ultraviolet) damage. Pulsed plasmas can also ameliorate unwanted artefacts in etched micro-features such as notching, bowing, micro-trenching ...

Diagnostics of Dielectric Barrier Discharge at Atmospheric Pressure by Laser Spectroscopic Measurements

Spatial distribution of electron density inside parallel plate dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is discussed in this presentation by using CO2-laser heterodyne interferometry measurement. This interferometry measurement has been used for low pressure plasmas and applied to DC microplasmas at atmospheric pressure recently. To derive the electron density inside pulsed plasmas like DBD, we used ...

Development of a Lumped Element Circuit Model for Approximation of Nanosecond Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharges

This work presents a circuit model for calculating the total energy dissipated into neutral species for nanosecond pulsed direct current (DC) dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas. Based on experimental observations, it is assumed that the nanosecond pulsed DBD’s which have been proposed for aerodynamic flow control can be approximated by two independent regions of homogeneous electric fie...

Pulse Power Applied to Process Industry and Environment

Pulsed power application has emerged to become an important technology in today’s industry beyond defense sectors, although historically the applications included particle acceleration, imploding plasmas and related. Pulsed power refers to the technology where a steady accumulation of energy followed by its rapid release, results in the delivery of a large amount of instantaneous power over a v...
